The Data Distribution Centre was designated by the XIIIth IPCC Plenary as a joint enterprise to be run by the Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum (DKRZ/MPI) in Hamburg, Germany, and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK. DKRZ has taken primary responsibility to acquire, process and archive the relevant GCM data, while CRU has taken responsibility to collate the baseline climate data, the socio-economic scenarios and to produce a CD-ROM. This CD-ROM will contain all of these data as well as aggregate fields from the GCMs and an illustrated on-line tutorial.
The funding for the DDC has been provided by the German Government and by the United Kingdom Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR).
The DDC is advised and guided by the IPCC Task Group on Scenarios for Climate Impact Assessment (TGCIA), chaired by Professor Martin Parry. Both the DDC and the TGCIA are supported by the IPCC Technical Support Units of both Working Group I and Working Group II, through whom they are accountable to the IPCC. Guidance Material:
The preparation of the guidance material and documentation for the scenarios
will be coordinated by Dr.Timothy Carter of the Finnish Meteorological Institute,
Helsinki, in close co-operation with the DDC. It will include descriptions
of the GCM experiments, discussion of the uncertainties of climate scenarios,
guidance on their application in impacts studies, and suggestions on the
reporting of research results.
